Raheem Sterling to Become a Silkman?

National League side Macclesfield Town have hit the headlines by launching a slightly ambitious attempt to sign Liverpool’s want away forward Raheem Sterling!

No, seriously, they have. The club have set up a crowd funding page with the target being to raise a whopping fifty million quid to enable them to enter the race for the unsettled star’s signature.

The cheeky club have even had a massive pop at Brendan Rogers’ team, saying that while a move to Moss Rose might be a big step down the divisions, at least “he wouldn’t have to sit on the bench and watch a 6-1 defeat at Stoke City.” They also say that Sterling could be “the difference in helping us to retain the Cheshire Cup next season.”

At the time of writing this, they have attracted twenty seven backers, who have amassed pledges to the tune of £119. The page can be found at http://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/bring-raheem-to-macclesfield and there are options for every budget, from just a quid all the way up to a couple of grand.

While this is a stunt, it does have a unique approach. It of course puts Macclesfield Town in the spotlight, as this is sure to generate huge coverage. Not only that, though. Any funds raised will actually be used by the club to try and sign a new player.

So why not join the Silkmen in their cheeky attempt to sign an England international, in the knowledge that in the unlikely event that they fail to land their number one target, the money will be used to strengthen the team.

About James Bartaby

Hey, I'm James and I'm relatively new to non-league football, having only taken in my first match in September 2011. Despite it being a 0-4 defeat for Hampton & Richmond Borough, I became a huge fan of the club and NL in general. So much so that they are now the first club that I mention when talking about which team I support! I just got massively disillusioned with top flight football in this country and the attitudes of the lawmakers and top clubs in general, and I wanted to start taking my son to see decent football. I am now the club's Deputy Press Officer, and loving every minute!
