FA Trophy Replays Preview

A quick look at the rearranged second round ties taking place this week.

There are just two second round ties to be decided ahead of next week’s third round ties take place. Hampton & Richmond Borough host East Thurrock United, while Worksop Town welcome Newport County. Of course, these games should have taken place last week, but all fell foul of the weather.

There has already been one replay decided, with Luton Town confidently beating Hinckley United 3-0 at Kenilworth Road on Monday night. An own goal, coupled with strikes from Amari Morgan-Smith and Stuart Fleetwood, ensured there would be no shock. Their first meeting had finished goalless. Luton will now travel to Kidderminster Harriers in the third round.

Hampton & Richmond, meanwhile, owe their second chance largely to goalkeeper Craig Ross, who kept East Thurrock at bay with some crucial interventions and saves in their first meeting. Conference South Hampton had taken the lead early in the match, when a cross from Charlie Moone deflected into the net off defender Tom Stephen. The home side dominated large portions of the match, and finally got their reward when top scorer Sam Higgins smashed in an equaliser. Borough are definitely lucky to have a replay against their Isthmian Premier League opponents, and will have to guard against complacency if they are to triumph second time around. The winners of this tie have a long trip north to face Northwich Victoria in the next round. Assuming, of course, that the Vics have a ground in which to play their home games.

The other tie to be decided is not a replay, but a twice postponed match in the second round. Newport County, of the Conference Premier, travel to Nottinghamshire to take on Northern Premier League side Worksop Town. With Worksop being comfortably in mid-table in the NPL, and Newport only just outside the Conference Premier’s relegation zone, I can see an upset on the cards. Whoever does come through this match will be rewarded with a home tie against Isthmian Premier side Carshalton Athletic in the third round.

The full third round draw is as follows:

Kidderminster Harriers v Luton Town
Northwich Victoria v East Thurrock United or Hampton & Richmond Borough
Cambridge United v Guiseley AFC
Dartford v Wealdstone
Bath City v Grimsby Town
York City v Ebbsfleet United
Gateshead v Alfreton Town
Worksop Town or Newport County v Carshalton Athletic

Matches will be played on Saturday, February 4th.

About James Bartaby

Hey, I'm James and I'm relatively new to non-league football, having only taken in my first match in September 2011. Despite it being a 0-4 defeat for Hampton & Richmond Borough, I became a huge fan of the club and NL in general. So much so that they are now the first club that I mention when talking about which team I support! I just got massively disillusioned with top flight football in this country and the attitudes of the lawmakers and top clubs in general, and I wanted to start taking my son to see decent football. I am now the club's Deputy Press Officer, and loving every minute!
