“A Bit Flattering”

Martin Thacker says the scoreline flattered the opposition, but a second successive defeat for Hall Road Rangers leaves them in thirteenth place in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division table.

Hall Road Rangers succumbed to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Barton Town Old Boys on Saturday, on a blustery afternoon at Dene Park. Rangers were 2-0 down by half time, after goals from Ashley Dexter and Ashley Lattimore had given the Swans the lead. Anthony Bowsley scored a third in the second half to seal the win, but according to Hall Road boss Martin Thacker, his side had been hard done by.

“3-0 is probably a bit flattering”, he claimed. “James [Fossdyke] hasn’t made a save, their goalkeeper hasn’t made a save, and so it’s not as if we can say they’ve had 20 shots and scored three goals.”

It took the home side 33 minutes to have an effort at goal, when Joe Cooper’s looping half-volley sailed wide of the Barton post. In a game of limited clearcut chances, Barton had taken the lead after 24 minutes when captain Dexter nodded in Lattimore’s corner. Lattimore turned from provider to finisher two minutes before the break, when he stretched to poke the ball over the line after a scramble in the box.

Into the second half, and Rangers were denied an early penalty when Dave Ricardo appeared to have been bundled over in the box. The referee, though, waved play on. Ex-Hall Road midfielder, Anthony Bowsley, scored a third for the Swans with a little over 20 minutes to go – meeting a deep cross with the side of his foot to angle the ball past Fossdyke. “It’s a perfect away performance for Barton, but it’s probably the worst home performance we’ve had in a while”, reflected Thacker. “You’ve got to give credit to them. Their manager has got them organised, they stuck to a plan and applied it quite well. “We’re a bit more off the cuff. We’ll try and get it forward to our good players and try and play it, but today wasn’t the conditions to do that.”

Rangers stay in 13th in the NCEL Premier Division, ahead of Tuesday night’s clash with Armthorpe Welfare, also at Dene Park.

About James Bartaby

Hey, I'm James and I'm relatively new to non-league football, having only taken in my first match in September 2011. Despite it being a 0-4 defeat for Hampton & Richmond Borough, I became a huge fan of the club and NL in general. So much so that they are now the first club that I mention when talking about which team I support! I just got massively disillusioned with top flight football in this country and the attitudes of the lawmakers and top clubs in general, and I wanted to start taking my son to see decent football. I am now the club's Deputy Press Officer, and loving every minute!
